Cinematography

 Cinematography - moving images

Shot types - a shot is a series of frames that run for an uninterrupted period of time

  • ELS - extreme long shot, complete view of a setting, to emphasize an expanse of space

  • LS - long shot, closer than ELS but still shows complete image
  • MS - medium shot, on a human body, gestures, expressions and physical appearance
  • CU - close up, shows details in the subject, maybe just the persons face
  • BCU - big close up, on the face, shows the social triangle (two eyes and mouth)
  • ECU - extreme close up, only reveals certain characteristics and emotions

Camera Angles - marks the specific location at which the camera is placed to take a shot. A scene may be shot from several camera angles simultaneously.

  • High - positioned high above and over a subject to emphasize the overall smallness within the shot
  • Low - positioned low on the vertical axis, anywhere below the eye line, looking up
  • Eye level - when the level of the camera is placed at the same height as the eyes of the characters in the frame.
  • Oblique - gives a tilted perspective
